Khaps take charge to eradicate Drug Menace in Haryana

Apprehensive of rampant drug abuse in Haryana khap panchayats in the state have taken charge to check the menace. Leaders of about three dozen khap panchayats met at Kandela village of Jind district and resolved to form a committee of 21 persons for each village to keep an eye on drug smugglers and liquor contractors engaged in illegal supply.



Targeting the illegal liquor shops the khap leaders have resolved to a run a campaign to close illegal liquor shops apart from demanding shifting of all liquor vendors out of villages.

Khap leader from Hisar district Rajkumar Reddy said he was surprised to know about the menace of smack in his neighbouring village Bichpari and Narwana town of Jind.



"Punjab was a leading state in sports as well in education before the menace of drugs in Punjab. We don't want to see similar situation in Haryana," said Reddu, 63, a retired government school principal.

Khap panchayats are going to keep close eye on the illegal activities and make sure that youth is made aware of this nationwide problem.
"We want to save the youths by launching an awareness campaign," added Khap leader.
